The Plymouth Roadrunner was introduced in 1968 as a budget-friendly performance car. The low pricetag appealed to younger buyers who were interested in performance but could not afford the expensive musclecars being built at the time.

The Roadrunner was creating using the Satellite body series but included less trim and fewer options than a Satellite or the GTX performance car. Less trim meant lower weight, and the standard high-performance engine meant fun, fun, fun!

Chrysler licensed the Roadrunner name and image from Warner Brothers. Chrysler also licensed the cartoon bird's sound, installing a special horn in the Roadrunner to sound like the cartoon bird. This special horn gave the Roadrunner it's street nicknames, "beeper" or "beep beep".
