Need For Speed: Rivals is the 20th instalment in the long-running Need For Speed series of racing games, developed by Ghost Games and published by Electronic Arts. Rivals was officially announced on 23rd May, together with a teaser trailer and some images. This will be the first Need For Speed game for the next-gen consoles, namely, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, although it will also be released on the current generation, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Need For Speed: Rivals will feature similar gameplay to 2010's Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, with exotic cars and high-speed police chases. Players take on the role of a racer or a cop, with each side of the law offering its own set of challenges, risks and rewards. Rivals will feature 11 upgradeable gadgets such as EMPs, shockwaves and the ability to call in roadblocks. The game takes place in a fictional location known as Redview Count, an open word map that's host to scraps between cops and robbers. It's an open world and will feature a similar set-up to 2012's Most Wanted, with chock-full of jumps, speed traps and unlockable cars.

The game uses Autolog, the competition-between-friends system developed by Criterion for Hot Pursuit, and since used in other titles in the Need For Speed series. It will let players compare stats and challenge friends anytime, anywhere and share the accomplishments with both friends and rivals. Rivals features a new social system called AllDrive, which allow players to seamlessly transition from playing alone, to playing with friends, described as "destroying the line between single player and multiplayer".

Rivals will also take on a little gameplay style of earlier "Underground" titles in the franchise for cues on aesthetic vehicle customizations, as performance upgrades, paint jobs, decals, rims and license plates can be modified. Ferrari returns to the franchise for the first time in four years with the F12 Berlinetta.

The official word:

Risk Everything in the Ultimate Rivalry - Welcome to Redview County, where a street-racing rivalry between cops and racers never stops as both sides push the limits to win followers and support in an all-out media war.
