Need For Speed 3: Hot Pursuit was published on 1998 and is the third installment in the Need for Speed series. This is the first game in the series to heavily revolve around police, this time with significantly improved AI from The Need for Speed and is often considered the first defining title of the series. It was released for PC and PlayStation.

The sequel Hot Pursuit 2 was released four years later in 2002 as EA Black Box's debut title.

Overview

In the third major installment of Electronic Arts' Arcade racing series, there are several modes of play available. You have the standard race, with one big difference - now there are traffic cops out to ticket you for your excessive speed. Alternatively, you can take your turn with the radar gun and attempt to pull over speeding computer or human racers.

Returning to the flavour of the original Need for Speed, this adds a new Pursuit mode, where you must out run the cops through fast, open area tracks, while also out-lasting the rest of the pack. Another new mode is knockout, where you race through all the tracks, and whoever is last after each race is knocked out. The winner is, of course, the one that lasts the distance.

Pursuit system

The police AI is more tough in this game. The police are now more tactical, being able to deploy roadblocks and spike strips. Both tactics present weaknesses however. Players can also listen to radio chatter between police units. The game also allows for multiple cars to chase the player, whereas TNFS only allowed one. The police are playable in PC but not PSX. The player can still be arrested though, regardless of being in a police vehicle or not.
